To protect the public from the “invisible menace” of ozone poisoning this summer, the American Lung Association of New England (ALANE) is calling for more stringent air quality standards. Today, the organization announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines released earlier this spring will not adequately safeguard public health.

Resources

We cannot adequately thank the over 1800 cyclists, more than 500 volunteers and thousands of supporters who make the 2008 Trek Across Maine the most successful American Lung Association fundraising event in the nation once again.  For the past 24 years, this 180 mile ride from Sunday River to the sea has supported our mission and has gained us thousands of loyal friends in Maine and throughout the nation.  Together a record number of cyclists and volunteers raised a record amount (nearly $1.5 million) to help us assure that the air we breathe will not cause lung disease or make it worse.

The Trek is much more than a bike ride.  Every year one or more Trekkers tell me about how this event has changed their lives.  Some have used it to focus their efforts to quit smoking, to lose weight, to get into shape or all of the above. I had one Trekker this year tell me they lost 100 pounds training for the event.  Because the event ends each year on Father's Day, many participants ride with their father or dedicate the ride to the memory of their father.  For others it has become a family tradition both as an adventure and as a way to demonstrate volunteerism and charity.

For the American Lung Association of Maine, the hard work done by all associated with the Trek means we will be able to continue our critical work of preventing lung disease promoting lung health and fighting for healthy air.  Thanks also to the over 850 of you who have already signed up for the 25th anniversary Trek Across Maine.  We will have lots of special surprises for all.

Thanks to all.
